Maids Care CIC provides a range of high quality domiciliary care services to clients across Torbay. Their ethos is to promote and aid independent living; allowing service users to maintain dignity, self-respect, choice and inclusion. Jacqui McKenna and Anna Brewer, the directors of the company, established the business to deliver a package that meets the needs of many people in the area. With stories in the press of shorter and shorter home visits they knew they could offer a better service.
As a start up business, Jacqui looked into ways that the business could be supported through its early stages. While they were confident their offer was valued and would succeed, ways to find funding to support the business financially from the start was crucial.
Jacqui applied for support to expand the business through the ERDF Growth Support Programme, which TDA is a delivery partner. After an initial business diagnostic with a TDA business Advisor, a support plan was created and the advisor helped the business create a realistic cash flow and develop a robust Business Plan. TDA were also able to signpost to other ERDF support and the company has received Digital and Social Enterprise support.
TDA Business advisors reviewed Maids Care’s business plan and offered loan guidance for the company. Mentoring the business during its set up period helped Jacqui get their New Enterprise Allowance (NEA) application signed off, meeting a tight deadline.
Anna said: “The support I received from TDA through the New Enterprise Allowance (NEA) programme has been incredible and I could not have got this far in such a short space of time without my mentor. TDA introduced me to a number of opportunities to assist the start up of Maids Care, including the Government NEA Loan and business support workshops.”
TDA Business Support:
- Business mentoring to help secure New Enterprise Allowance
- Business plan review and loan guidance to strengthen business start up
- ERDF Growth Support Programme and Government Start Up Loan support
- Cost effective office space at Torbay Business Centre with ongoing business support
Maids Care successfully operates out of offices at Torbay Business Centre. Since initially coming to the centre the company has since grown and expanded and now occupy two offices at the Centre.
Jacqui continued: “The offices here are perfect for us. All the bills are included which helps us manage our overheads and it is ideally located in the heart of Torbay. The fact that we can continue to use the business advice available from TDA, as tenants of the Centre, is a real benefit to being here.”

Bearings Southwest Ltd is a supplier of maintenance, repair and operation products to the Power Transmission industry, based at Highbridge Enterprise Centre, Somerset. Dan Green started Bearings Southwest Ltd trading in August 2016, and from a standing start has seen the company grow considerably.
When Dan was looking to start the business he was still in employment and had reservations about the risks he was taking by leaving a well paid job to go out on his own. With the help of a TDA business advisor, Dan discussed the pros and cons and made the decision to set up a limited company. Dan needed to find the right business premises and have a marketing strategy that would help his business thrive and grow.
Dan booked a 1:1 with a TDA Business Advisor who enrolled him on the Get Set for Growth scheme, provided him with a cost effective package on setting up a limited company and found suitable premises at Highbridge Enterprise Centre.
Dan said: “I decided to locate at Highbridge because I felt it was a strong location in terms of transport. The facilities and support at the Enterprise Centre are excellent. The advice and assistance I have received from the centre staff and the Business Advisor have been invaluable in helping me make my business a success.”
The Centre has further supported Dan in his efforts to grow the business and in particular has worked to secure him a much needed larger unit, which he is due to move into this month. Dan continues to work with the TDA Business Advisor on a growth plan, as his business has grown quickly and he would like to support his employees through the range of workshops and develop their digital marketing.
- Business support
- Cost-effective, professional environment
- Networking opportunities
- Storage Space to expand into
- Established as a limited company
- Enrolled on Get Set for Growth initiative
- Client list constantly growing, 30 at the end of 2016
- Taking on a Full Time employee
By the end of December 2016 the company had 30 clients, but that list is expanding all the time. So much so, that storage has become a bit of an issue, and Dan is in the process of moving to larger premises within Highbridge Enterprise Centre.
Dan continued: “Bearings Southwest Ltd has grown rapidly since its inception in August 2016. We now have 30 customers on our books, and more coming through all the time. The move into larger premises will help with stock holdings, enabling us to offer a wider range. I expect growth to continue apace in 2017, and I am looking to take on more staff to supplement the three existing.”
“I have made some good business connections from being located in the Enterprise Centre, and this has been one of the factors in the rapid growth of the company. The secure premises, fast internet access, business support and location make Highbridge ideal for my business – I’d recommend it to anyone starting up.”

Experienced, qualified practice nurse Jane Wilkins runs an independent
earwax removal clinic from Highbridge Enterprise Centre.
Providing high quality, professional earwax removal services using both
microsuction and irrigation using the latest techniques and equipment
with her client’s safety and comfort as the number one priority.
When back surgery meant practice nurse Jane Wilkins was off work for
10 weeks she spent the time researching and looking at ways to make
her business dream take shape.
Running her own earwax removal clinic was something that she had
been considering. The service was slowly being discontinued by the
NHS. Having spent many years carrying out the procedure at her local
practice she knew what a difference it can make to a person’s quality of
life. With a change in family circumstances, and a need for some more
flexibility at work, Jane was feeling motivated to set up on her own.
With extensive practical expertise in her field professionally, the
challenge was taking the leap to set up in business. The process of
finding the right premises, and embracing the implications of running a

easily accessible out of hours, and a place I could feel safe when working
on my own. Importantly, by running my business from Highbridge, I am

patient’s needs from the friendly environment of her tailored room.
Patients are then treated using one of two methods carried out by Jane.
Some sessions are completed in a single visit, whereas a series of
sessions are sometimes required.
“At the moment I am one of the only people in the area running a full
clinic, Monday to Friday, offering the services that I do. The feedback
from my patients has been so supportive. People have been getting in
touch following recommendations from audiologists, opticians and my
client base is steadily growing.”
“I love doing what I do. The environment here means I am able to put
people at ease. I was at a point when I knew it was the time to make the
change professionally and I’m so happy I had the belief to make the
