Nina Adwick was unemployed for three years as a single mother bringing up her daughter by herself. Nina decided to look at starting a business in something she was passionate about and to have a work/life balance for her daughter.

Nina began a 2-year 500 hour Hatha Yoga course while studying Beauty Therapy for 2 years at South Devon College. While travelling in her twenties, Nina also studied holisitic therapies in Thailand and India and completed a 6 month course in spa therapies in the spa mecca of the world, Bali. In June 2018, Nina opened Nurture by Nina to apply what she has learned.

The Challenge

Nina welcomed support during the first steps of her new business to help her develop her understanding of enterprise and create a progressive and achievable business plan. Through the DWP New Enterprise Allowance, Nina met with TDA Business Advisors to establish an initial strategy, develop a business plan and a detailed cash flow forecast through mentoring sessions.

Nina said: “I believe yoga changes lives. It brings peace and balance to people’s lives and benefits a vast array of physical and mental conditions. My aim is to provide people in our local community with classes and workshops that helps them to take care of themselves. I adore giving holistic treatments and bringing a sense of wellbeing to the people that use the business.”

Being able to be a social enterprise was one of Nina’s key targets, motivated by providing sessions to people who need it the most.

Nina continued: “Yoga is a luxury that many can’t afford and it is the people that need it the most that can’t afford it.”

The Solution

After Nina had been through the New Enterprise Allowance scheme and her business was registered she was eligible to progress onto the ERDF Growth Support Programme. TDA Business Advisors continued to provide advice through the programme, which helped develop ideas and skills to support business growth.

Nina explained: “Working with the advisors at TDA, I was able to reflect on my business plan and look at the skills I needed to run a successful business. By identifying funding opportunities, I am now able to reach more people by providing Affordable Yoga and Free Community Yoga, thanks to Active Devon and Love Sport.

“Meeting with the advisors gave me the confidence that I have the right skills, qualifications and product to launch my business, take it forward and make it a real success. In particular, the support around Digital Marketing has helped develop my Social Media presence.”

Results

Nuture by Nina now provide Free Community Yoga sessions in Paignton and a community class in Torquay where Affordable Yoga is offered.

Nina added: “Being able to provide my classes to disadvantaged ladies and then be able to signpost them on to further support and guidance is really satisfying. Wellbeing is so important and being able to welcome people completely free is fantastic.”

Kim Thornton, TDA Business Advisor, said: “Nina has identified an opportunity to deliver a wellbeing business in Torbay and has all the right skills to deliver this. We are pleased to be able to work with Nuture by Nina to see the business develop and grow. It is great to see a business finding funding to be able to help give a vital service back to the community.

“Nina is a great example of someone who has the ‘product’ but struggles to get her message out the wider audience. The 1:1 support has already shown great results within her Social Media presence and we will continue to expand on this through her attendance of upcoming Digital Marketing Workshops.”
